Where are wire ropes for winches used?

From rather delicate ropes in event and stage technology, e.g. for moving curtains, to strong and very robust ropes in the construction industry, e.g. for lifting heavy concrete parts – our steel wire ropes are used in conjunction with wire rope winches in a wide range of industries:

  • Automotive industry, e.g. for vehicle recovery with towing winches
  • Fishing and angling, e.g. for cable winches for nets
  • Gardening and landscaping, e.g. for moving heavy elements
  • Industrial and garage doors, e.g. for drives with rope guidance
  • Agriculture and forestry, e.g. forestry cable winches are frequently used here
  • Load and lifting technology, e.g. on construction sites for cranes or lifting platforms
  • Mechanical and plant engineering, e.g. for integrated winches in production lines
  • Natural stone quarrying and natural stone processing, e.g. for winches for pulling large blocks of stone
  • Event and stage technology, e.g. winches for moving scenery
  • Water and air gliders, e.g. winches for gliders or boat trailers
  • …and many other areas.

What requirements must wire ropes for cable winches meet?

Not every wire rope is automatically suitable for a cable winch. Such a rope must have certain properties that make it suitable for use with a winch:

  • It must be designed for high tensile forces, such as in elevator and conveyor technology when pulling an elevator.
  • It must be particularly flexible and be able to be wound and unwound smoothly by the winch.
  • The rope construction must have good bending properties.
  • The steel cable must be made of stainless steel or galvanized to be suitable for outdoor use
  • The length and diameter of the rope must be precisely matched to the cable winch and also to the application.
  • It is often necessary for the wire rope to be fitted with hooks or thimbles so that it can be attached to a vehicle or forestry winches, for example.

The right wire rope for every cable winch

We offer the rope in diameters from 3 to 5 mm. As it consists of 49 individual wires, it is flexible enough to be wound onto a winch, is dimensionally stable and not too soft. The steel cable is suitable for light to medium tensile loads and is easy to assemble. It can be used in a variety of ways, e.g. as a winch rope for gliding.

The rope, available in thicknesses from 3 to 11 mm, consists of a total of 133 individual wires and is one of the most flexible and versatile wire ropes with good tensile strength. Thanks to its good winding properties, it is suitable for small to medium-sized mobile applications, e.g. for pulleys or fitness equipment.

Our strongest rope for winches: Diameter 8 to 22 mm. The rope consists of 6 strands, each made up of 36 wires. This makes it highly flexible, very pliable and easy to unwind thanks to its fine structure. The steel cable can withstand high dynamic loads and is suitable for lifting heavy loads, e.g. in salvage and heavy-duty transportation or when pulling tree trunks with forestry winches.

Wire ropes for cable winches in various materials

  • Galvanized steel ropes: These ropes are the most commonly used. They have a high strength and are coated with a layer of zinc, which provides a certain degree of corrosion protection. They are suitable for applications where the rope is occasionally exposed to moisture.
  • Stainless steel ropes: Made from stainless steel, our stainless steel ropes offer high corrosion resistance and are ideal for use in marine environments or areas where hygiene is important.
  • Bare wire ropes: In addition, we offer ropes made from untreated steel. They are intended for applications where no additional corrosion protection is required.

High-quality end connections for reliable use

We also offer professional end fittings for your wire ropes on request. Whether you need robust clamps, sturdy thimbles or a practical load hook – we can equip your rope exactly as required. This gives you a ready-to-use solution that is perfectly tailored to your application.

FAQs – frequently asked questions about wire ropes for cable winches

The choice of the right wire rope depends on the application, the tensile load, the drum size and the ambient conditions. Hamburger Drahtseilerei offers you individual advice and a large selection of rope constructions such as 7×7, 7×19 or 6×36 WS – made up with hooks, eyelets or thimbles on request.

Yes, we offer both galvanized and stainless steel wire ropes – depending on the application. Stainless steel ropes are particularly corrosion-resistant and are therefore ideal for outdoor use, maritime applications or damp environments. Whether galvanized or stainless steel – we will find the right wire rope for your requirements.

That depends on the area of application. We offer lubricated and non-lubricated wire ropes. Our ropes are often required ungreased. Greased ropes can attract dirt, especially if they run over the ground. Installation can be difficult with a greased, slippery rope and the grease can pollute the environment, e.g. in agriculture and forestry. On the other hand, greased ropes have a longer service life as the grease protects against moisture and corrosion. Friction is also lower, which reduces wear. Lubrication also prevents wire fatigue and increases longevity. We will be happy to advise you on which variant suits your specific area of application.

This depends on usage and stress. Regular checks for brittleness of the wire, deformation or corrosion are important. Pay particular attention to the winch manufacturer’s instructions. In the event of heavy use, early replacement is recommended – our team will be happy to advise you on the service life and correct care of your rope.
