Structure of wire ropes and strands
A wire rope consists of several strands, which in turn are made from individual wires. The strands are wound spirally around a core (e.g. fiber core or steel core). This structure ensures that the rope is flexible, resilient and durable.
Designation | Description of the core |
---|---|
WSC | Wire strand |
IWRC | Independent stranded wire rope |
EPIWRC | Independent stranded wire rope with plastic cover |
FC | Fiber core |
NFC | Natural fiber core |
SFC | Synthetic fiber core |
Designation of strands and ropes
The designation such as 6×19 describes the structure of the rope: 6 strands with 19 wires each. Additions such as “+WSC”, “+FC” or “+IWRC” indicate which core is used. This information is important for selecting the right rope type for the respective application.
FC (Fiber Core) stands for fiber core, which is particularly flexible and shock-absorbing. WSC (Wire Strand Core) refers to a core made from a strand of wire, while IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) refers to a complete wire rope core that is particularly tensile and dimensionally stable.
The following overview shows the different designations for the core of a steel wire rope.
Seale, Warrington & Warrington-Seale
The designations Seale, Warrington and Warrington-Seale are special strand designs with wires of different thicknesses for improved load-bearing capacity and flexibility.
Designation | Description |
---|---|
S | Seale |
W | Warrington |
WS | Warrington-Seale |
The designation is based on the construction of the wire rope, e.g. 6x19S+WSC.
Designation | Lay direction |
---|---|
sZ (RHOL) | Right-hand cross lay |
zS (LHOL) | Left-hand cross lay |
zZ (RHLL) | Right-hand lay |
sS (LHLL) | Left-hand lay |
Lay direction for steel wire ropes
The lay direction describes how the wires and strands are wound around the core: clockwise or counterclockwise. With right-hand lay, the wires or strands are twisted clockwise around the core, with left-hand lay the other way round. The direction of lay influences the rope’s behavior under load and its tendency to twist. For gliding, for example, we offer extremely stable winch ropes with the 7x7wZ alternating lay construction in diameters of 4.2 and 4.6 mm.
This table summarizes the designations for the lay direction of wire ropes. The lower case letter stands for the lay direction of the wires and the upper case letter for the strands.
Coated wire ropes
We also offer coated steel wire ropes. With high-quality sheaths made of polypropylene, polyamide, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane, you effectively protect the rope against the ingress of dust, dirt and other particles and significantly extend its service life compared to ropes that are not sheathed. The smooth surface reduces the adhesion of dirt and makes cleaning easier, which is particularly advantageous in demanding environments.
With us, you can also choose the color and material for the sheath – so the sheathed rope can be optimally adapted to different areas of application and visual requirements. Typical applications can be found in water management, the construction industry, shipping, as a fitness rope and as a durable manure removal rope in agriculture.
